Ericka’s Story

Ericka began her pathway at North Lake in our Intensive English Centre and was offered a place in the Engineering undergraduate course at UWA straight from there…

It was a great achievement by Ericka who grew up in the Philippines and joined us our IEC in 2017. She was one of the award winners at the IEC Achievement Ceremony at the end of semester one.
Ericka, who is 19-years-old, arrived in Australia in March. “Dad will be working here and he wanted the whole family to come,” she said. “We learn English in The Philippines and I could speak just a little bit. It was good to get the opportunity to study at the North Lake IEC and be able to work with experienced teachers with great patience. I think I adapted to Australia very quickly.”

Ericka said she would always have good memories of North Lake. “I made new friends from China and Africa which was awesome. I worked with really supportive, sweet teachers and I had lots of fun, especially with form group and clubs.”

Ericka completed two years of Engineering study at college in her home country and was keen to see if she could get into the course at UWA. “I have friends at UWA and they told me what to do,” she said, “I was also absent from IEC for three days when I studied for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test!” She started at UWA in the second semester 2017

“I’m excited about studying with different people and learning how Australian uni education works.”
