Jill heading over east as an Archibald finalist

Fremantle Fast Track Art teacher Jill Ansell is a finalist in the Archibald Prize 2023.

The Archibald Prize was first awarded in 1921 and is considered Australia’s most prestigious portrait prize.

There were 949 entries submitted for the 2023 prize and 57 selected as finalists and therefore part of the Archibald Exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW from 5 May to 3 September.

Relatively few Western Australian artists have been entrants or finalists in the award over the years. Jill’s work Looking east explores one of the reasons for the lack of WA numbers – the cost and logistics of getting an often large work of art across the Nullarbor to Sydney.
