After a few years out in the workforce Indigo decided to come back to school. She joined the Industrial Studies course as a Year 11 with the aim of getting the grades she needed to move into a pre-apprenticeship course at TAFE next year.
Things have progressed quickly. After taking the opportunity to complete a five-day Try a Trade course at the Rockingham campus of South Metropolitan TAFE Indigo not only added to her CV but attracted interest from an employer.
“I’m really grateful to the school for supporting me in the Try a Trade,” she said, “I got my White Card and also my Working With Heights and Communication in the Workplace tickets, things I was hoping to get done by the end of the year.
Carpentry is the trade that appeals to Indigo most. “I like the hands on side of it,” she said, and I like proving girls can do these jobs.”
Following the Try a Trade experience Indigo was offered a trial with S&G Building Solutions and a possible carpentry apprenticeship.
“I know they will teach me what I need down to a tee.”
“I’ve found North Lake much better than normal high school,” Indigo said. “I think it’s good that you can come back to school after time away and get the education you need to do what you want to do.
The atmosphere at North Lake is something that has impressed Indigo. “It’s kind of a homely feel,” she said.
