Intensive English Centre

ArtGroupIECsmallNorth Lake Senior Campus Intensive English Centre (IEC) caters for students aged 16-21 who are new to Australia and want to learn standardised English in preparation for upper school Years 11 & 12, TAFE, university and employment.

Location and Environment

North Lake Senior Campus is located in Kardinya, south of the Swan River, with direct access to public transport. It is close to Murdoch Train Station and a five-minute walk to a major shopping centre.

The campus is surrounded by natural bushland and is home to many Australian native animals and birds. The tranquil setting provides students with a peaceful learning environment to study, play sport or simply relax.

All classrooms and major buildings are equipped with air-conditioning and heating to provide maximum comfort for students year-round.

Courses

The Intensive English Program is a full-time course taught by a team of highly qualified and experienced specialist teachers. Students are taught standardised English in the context of subjects they will study in upper school Years 11 and 12. This means that whilst learning English, students gain a background in Year 11 and 12 subjects. This is particularly important for international students who may have completed a high level of education in their own country but often find it difficult to understand tasks and explain complex ideas in English.

Classes are small in size, with six to 15 students in each, to ensure they benefit from one-to-one assistance catering to their individual learning needs and interests. Students are strongly encouraged to practise their English at school and at home, and to take responsibility for their own learning.

GradIEC16
Support

IEC teachers work with students in a caring and supportive environment where individual cultures are respected and nurtured.

A full range of student support services is available for students in the IEC. Multilingual education assistants facilitate students with their understanding and completion of tasks using their home or first language. They also help students with cultural understanding and dealing with problems they may face settling in a new country. When students move to Years 11 and 12, they will continue to be supported by a specialist language teacher who works closely with the subject teacher to ensure students have a full understanding of what is required of them.

Students also have access to a nurse, a chaplain/student support worker and a school psychologist. They help students with medical, personal, family, financial and other issues while maintaining privacy and confidentiality.

Excellent career counselling is also available on campus with guidance provided to students when they choose their pathways.

Technology

Modern technologies including computers, projectors, Interactive Whiteboards and iPads are used to enhance student learning. Teachers incorporate these modern technologies into their programs in order to cater for students with different learning needs and styles. Computers are readily available to students when they need them.

Facilities

The campus is superbly equipped with modern facilities to promote extracurricular activities. The Auditorium is a perfect place for music lovers and the spacious gymnasium has a basketball court, table tennis (ping pong) and pool table for more casual recreation. Next to the gymnasium is a full-sized tennis court, while a half-Olympic sized swimming pool is available for use under supervision. IEC students can participate in swimming lessons conducted by specially trained instructors.

Clubs

Club activities are run by the IEC every Friday. Students can participate in a variety of interests including art, computing, photography, soccer, volleyball, basketball and cooking. Each club runs on a five-week cycle to allow students to experience a number of different activities. Club participation provides students with an excellent opportunity to practise their language skills in an informal environment and gain an understanding and respect for people from other cultures.
